IVF FOR 40s AGE

In vitro fertilization (IVF): What is it?

IVF is a process in which fertility drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries/follicles to generate mature eggs. These mature eggs are then aspirated from the ovaries and fertilized with the partner’s (or donor’s) sperm in a lab which is called the retrieval and fertilization process. After fertilization, embryologists monitor the growth of embryos for 3-5 days while the embryo transfer process begins. Patients can also decide whether or not they would like to do Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) to determine whether or not the embryo is chromosomally normal.

Why is IVF needed?

Diminished ovarian reserve, obstructed fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, unexplained infertility, and endometriosis are all possible indications of IVF. A relative indicator of pregnancy risk is a mother who is over 40 due to the quick depletion of her egg supply. For those with other underlying conditions, IVF may be a more useful and cost-effective option when it comes to family planning.

Genetic testing has allowed for doctors and patients to be sure that a genetically normal embryo is transferred thus increasing your chances of becoming pregnant. You can choose to have your embryos examined for chromosomal abnormalities during IVF, which provides you the best chance of a safe and successful pregnancy. It can also lower the risk of both a birth defect and pregnancy loss.

WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF BEING OVER 40 ON FERTILITY

Egg quantity and quality diminish throughout menstruation and aging. Other problems could also affect fertility in conjunction with age which can result in increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities, low stimulation results, and gestational risks.

Women over the age of 40 may benefit from using donor eggs. Donor eggs typically come from donors with greater egg quality and have been screened for infectious diseases and genetics. Profiles also give general characteristics of the donor such as hair and eye color, race/ethnicity, and height.

Menopause can happen spontaneously at any moment but is more common between the ages of 45 and 55. Cycles may alter a little in the years before your menstrual cycle ends. You could be experiencing several of the typical menopause-related symptoms, such as hot flashes and mood swings. They could become more frequent, heavier, or lighter. This results from changes in your hormone levels. Because menopause can be unpredictable, it is encouraged for women to have a family plan at an earlier age if possible. Family planning will vary from person to person whether it be through egg freezing, embryo banking, etc. which is why it is recommended to see a specialist who can help determine the best course.

Any age might be challenging for fertility. Consulting with a fertility specialist after 6-12 months of trying to conceive is strongly recommended so that testing can be done to determine the best options.
