In adrenocortical deficiency situations, replacement treatment is applied using naturally occurring glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone and cortisone), which also have the ability to retain salt. Their strong anti-inflammatory actions are largely employed to treat diseases of several organ systems by their synthetic analogs, such as prednisone.
